She-Hulk Ribbit and Rip it Review: The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen comes to LA in the best episode of the season

Ribbit and Rip it is easily the best episode of the series. Ribbit and Rip it features the strong comedy, heart and action elements present in the stronger episodes of the series but goes a little further thanks to a particular Devil from New York City.

Any hesitancy over Matt Murdock fitting into the MCU is laid to rest in the latest episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Tatiana Maslany and Charlie Cox have incredible chemistry.

The tone may be lighter than in the Netflix Daredevil series. However, Cox remains perfect as Murdock. The Netflix series focuses on Matt’s trauma and demons. In She-Hulk, it’s refreshing to see Murdock outside of Hell’s Kitchen. Cox gets to showcase the charming, flirtatious side of Murdock.

Adding to Murdock’s sunnier disposition is Jennifer Walters. From the moment, Murdock walks into the bar, Jen is completely into Matt. Here’s a man who’s in the same line of work. He is actively trying to do good by representing clients pro bono while taking bigger money cases to keep the lights on.

Using Leap-Frog as a would-be hero whose suit malfunctions is a smart way to bring superhero fashion designer Luke Jacobson back into the story.

The only issue with the episode was the stark tonal shift near the end of the episode. Jen does break the 4th wall in setting up the change in tone. However, the Female Lawyer of the Year ceremony could have been used to begin the season finale as opposed to closing the penultimate episode. Going from the fun events in this episode to revenge porn is a rough transition.

With the overview out of the way, let’s dive deeper into the elements that stood out in Ribbit and Rip it. There may be some minor spoilers. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is available to stream on Disney Plus.

Matt Murdock is ready to Ribbit and Rip it in the MCU

After this episode, I think Matt Murdock could become Tony Stark or Steve Rogers for Disney Plus. He can lead his own show, work as a supporting player or even show up as a cameo.

Before Matt shows up, Leap-Frog is shown failing to stop a robbery. His rocket boots catch on fire and cause 3rd-degree burns. He meets with Jen to take his case. When Jen finds out the person who designed Leap-Frog’s costume was Luke, her fashion designer, she tries to back out of the case.

Matt shows up in the courtroom as Luke’s lawyer. The back-and-forth between Matt and Jen is the best-written courtroom scene in the series. Matt is able to get the case dismissed after catching a whiff of fuel. He asks Leap-Frog if he used jet fuel for his boots. Leap-Frog says yes. For the first time in the series, Jen straight-up loses the case.

A daring team up

Jen is drowning her sorrows at the bar. Matt shows up. They immediately hit it off.

Matt’s “one for them, one for us” line is easily my favorite line uttered in the entire series. Essentially, Matt represents most of his clients pro bono. However, he occasionally takes big money cases to keep the lights on. Jen spends so much time on the “them” type of cases she doesn’t feel like she can’t take the “us” cases. Fortunately, Matt points out that as She-Hulk Jen has the ability to help in a different manner.

Jen and Matt both receive calls cutting the evening short. After losing his case, Leap-Frog decides to kidnap Luke. Daredevil attempts to stop the kidnapping. Unfortunately, She-Hulk intervenes in what is probably the best fight sequence in the show. She-Hulk and Daredevil square off with She-Hulk eventually unmasking Daredevil.

Matt explains the situation and the two superlawyers team up to stop Leap-Frog. Jen is having the best time teaming up with Matt. They discuss the difference between goons and henchmen as well as Matt’s stealthy approach to taking out the kidnappers one by one.

After the fight, Matt and Jen hook up and Matt does a walk of shame the morning after which is hilarious. I love how Ribbit and Rip it teases an epic hallway fight, but She-Hulk breaks it up. The chemistry between Maslany and Cox is off the charts in this episode.

Female Lawyer of the Year

The episode ends on a dark note. After spending a devilishly daring night with Matt, Nikki pops in to help Jen get ready for the awards ceremony for Female Lawyer of the Year.

Ribbit and Rip it proceeds to disappoint Jen from this point on. First off, the Female Lawyer of the Year award isn’t a singular award. The award was handed out to several lawyers, one of which is Mallory Book. The host makes the situation awkward by being incredibly patronizing. He utters a line like “female lawyers do everything male lawyers do with heels on and backward.”

Unfortunately for Jen, the situation only gets worse. Masked men clad in black show up. The information Josh cloned from Jen’s phone in the last episode is flashed up on the screen. The group goes a step further by showing the video of Josh and Jen sleeping together.

Jen is understandably angry. She punches the screen and is surrounded by Damage Control agents. Jen may need a good lawyer herself. She knows a devilishly handsome one.

For whatever reason, the crowd and the other award recipients seem to feel Jen’s actions are out of line, which is just crazy. Also, this part of the episode should have been saved for the season finale. Jen warning the audience isn’t enough preparation for something as dark as revenge porn.

Ribbit and Rip it Final Thoughts

Maslany and Cox are flawless in this episode. Lesser actors could have made these two hitting it off feel forced. Thankfully, that’s not the case.

The ending is too big of a change in tone and the lack of explanation as to how Matt can practice law in California is odd. Luckily, Ribbit and Rip it makes those quibbles fade like a Thanos snap.

I’m excited to see how the series ends next week.
