Superman and Lois Review: Mother, daughter shine in Girl… You’ll be a Woman Soon

Lana and Sarah Cushing get a rare, much-deserved chance to shine in Girl… You’ll be a Woman Soon.

Superman and Lois has been building up to Sarah quinceanera over the last couple of episodes. You’ll be a Woman Soon is all about capturing the event in a disastrous fashion. Although to most of the attendees, it’s a rather smooth event just not for the Cushings.

Emmanuelle Chriqui and Inde Navarrette are fantastic in this episode. Chriqui, in particular, does a great job of showing strength and poise in the face of a horrible situation. When Sarah, says she doesn’t think she can pretend everything is ok, Lana’s response is to put aside the family dysfunction to focus on what should matter which is Sarah’s celebration.

Lois and Chrissy’s investigation into Ally’s cult continues. The biggest revolution in this storyline is that it brings Clark into the story. Apparently, Ally’s cult is closely related to Bizarro’s appearance. I’m apprehensive about dovetailing Bizarro into the cult story. However, this could be a good way to bring Clark Kent into the investigation alongside Lois and Chrissy.

Sam is trying to train his grandson and Jonathan offers to help. Jonathan’s drug use increases his anger which he takes out on his brother. Most of his attacks are verbal, but there’s some physicality. Jonathan doesn’t come clean. He explains that he’s starting to develop powers. A lie that should come to a head sooner rather than later. Girl… You’ll be a Woman Soon is another episode that strands the Kent boys in the least interesting story of the episode. This is a recurring theme that needs to be fixed soon. However, it makes sense to cede the spotlight to the Cushings for this episode.

Overall, this episode succeeds by focusing on the Cushings. Bizarro finally speaks with Superman at the end of the episode. Bizarro is the 2nd straight villain to view this Superman as evil seems like a copy of John Henry Irons’s vendetta from last season, which is disappointing but could turn to fine.

The 2nd season of Superman and Lois is juggling a ton of stories. Can they execute on all of these stories? Time will tell.

A Quinceneara for the ages in Girl… You’ll be a Woman Soon

The Cushings begin Girl… You’ll be a Woman Soon as a solid family unit. Sarah is nervous about the event. Lana and Kyle build her confidence. Everything seems to be going well until the event itself.

The quinceanera is held at the Kent barn. Kyle is eventually confronted by a woman. Apparently, Kyle had an affair with the woman. When she wanted Kyle to be with her, he broke it off. Jordan and Sarah overhear this conversation.

Kyle returns to the party. Clark does his part to try and help. A distraught Sarah returns to the party and confronts her father. Lana notices and heads outside where she hears about Kyle’s betrayal.

Lana and Sarah are furious. Sarah is nearly inconsolable. However, Lana retains her composure throughout. She persuades Sarah to finish the ceremony. Sarah doesn’t think she can maintain the charade. After Sarah’s suicide attempt, the Cushings put forth an image of the perfect family. However, Lana insists that’s not the case here.

They are going to deal with this situation as a family, but nothing is going to disrupt celebrating the woman Sarah is becoming. Lana gives a beautiful, heartbreaking speech on the importance of family even when things are hard.

I can’t overstate how great Chriqui is throughout this episode. The series has struggled with the Cushings marriage issue. Lana has never been in the wrong throughout the series, which makes it difficult to feel any sympathy for Kyle. It definitely feels like Kyle is about to be written off the series.

Alternate Dimensions

Lois and Chrissy are working on the investigation into Ally’s cult, “The Inverse Method.” Chrissy pays Ally another visit and is drugged by the cult leader.

Chrissy wakes to find Lois barrelling into the room. She eventually describes an alternate dimension ruled by Ally.

Apparently, it’s this control that has led to multiple people converting to this cult. For some reason, Chrissy seems more empowered to investigate and take Ally down. I’m not sure why Chrissy is able to break through Ally’s mind games.

Teen Training

There are not as many Superman heroics in Girl… You’ll be a Woman Soon. However, it’s through Superman’s tracking of Bizarro that finally brings Lois, Chrissy and Bizzaro’s storylines together. I’m not too interested in Bizzaro’s affiliation with “The Inverse Method” and the alternate world. However, tieing Clark into Lois and Chrissy’s story has potential.

Meanwhile, Sam enlists Jonathan to help train Jordan. As the training goes along, Jonathan gets angrier at Jordan for his timid approach. Jordan repeatedly tries to get through to his usually calm brother. Jonathan’s anger nearly boils over to the point that his eyes begin burning red. Jordan then jumps on the fact that Jonathan finally has powers. Jonathan acquiesces to this lie. He wants to keep it a secret. This won’t end well for Jonathan.

Girl… You’ll be a Woman Soon Final Thoughts

Overall, Girl… You’ll be a Woman Soon succeeds with the quinceanera story. Chriqui and Navarrette thrive in a much-deserved spotlight. Everything else about the episode is window dressing. There’s nothing wrong with that as it allows the emotional climax of the quinceanera to shine. If the episode had been as noisy and crowded as last week’s, this storyline could have gotten lost in the shuffle.
